Monsoon to last in Odisha till next week

Bhubaneswar: Despite the fact that day temperatures and humidity have been rising in Odisha during the peak monsoon season, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has declared the state to be in the ‘break monsoon' phase until next week.

The ‘break monsoon' phenomenon, according to the IMD, occurs in August when there is a break in the monsoon rain. The monsoon trough moves closer to the Himalayan foothills during this time, resulting in a significant drop in rainfall across most of the country.

From August 8 to 12, the day temperature throughout Odisha, with the exception of the northern regions, will rise sharply, while the temperature in the state capital will reach 34-35 degrees Celsius from August 9 to 11.

Despite a 1-2 degree drop in day temperature on August 12 due to nor'wester rain, the average day temperature will be 33 degrees Celsius, according to the IMD.

Convectional rainfall, according to the IMD, is the source of thundershowers and moderate rainfall in various parts of Odisha. “When the sun's energy heats up the earth's surface, water vapour forms. Furthermore, the heated air rising from the ground expands and rises. Rainfall occurs when heated air cools and condenses at a higher altitude, usually in the afternoon", it said.

The monsoon will be active in Odisha after August 15, with increased rainfall as the monsoon trough approaches the state, according to the IMD.
