Berhampur: On Monday, a youth engaged in electricity meter reading was allegedly hacked to death by a consumer over a 'inflated' bill in Tarasingh, Ganjam district, Odisha.
The incident was reported in Kupati village, which falls under the jurisdiction of Tarasingh police station in the district's Bhanjanagar area. According to sources, the accused managed to flee the scene after committing the crime.
The identity of the deceased meter reader, who worked for a power distribution company, is unknown.
After the victim took a meter reading at a house, the residents complained that the bill contained incorrect information and that the amount mentioned was excessive.
The two sides got into an argument, with the consumer claiming that the bill was inflated. In a fit of rage, one of the house's residents attacked the meter reader with a sharp weapon, critically injuring him.
The victim was taken to a nearby hospital right away. According to sources, he was declared dead by the doctors.
An investigation was launched after a police team rushed to the scene. More information is awaited.
