Puri: For the elopement ritual of Lord Krishna with Devi Rukmini, popularly known as 'Rukmini Haran,' the Jagannath Temple in Puri will be closed to devotees for four hours beginning at 1 p.m. on Wednesday.
The ritual is performed on the shrine grounds on the auspicious Rukmini Haran Ekadashi, which is observed on the eleventh day of the waxing moon in the month of Jyestha, four days before Debasnana Purnima.
According to legend, Rukmini loved Krishna but her brother Rukmi wanted her to marry Sisupala. As a result, she secretly sends a message to Krishna, requesting that he stage her abduction and marry her.
Lord Jagannath is adorned with Baula Pata on this occasion and sends his representative, Madanmohan, to kidnap Rukmini, the princess of Vidharba, while she is praying at Maa Bimala temple. Sisupala pursues the pair, sparking a battle in which the Lord triumphs. When the war is over, the servitors begin preparing for Lord Jagannath and Goddess Rukmani's divine wedding on the Vivaha Mandap inside the temple.
On the same day as the divine marriage ceremony, the 'Jalakrida ritual' of 'Bhitara Chandan Jatra' is also held.
