Sambalpur: On Monday, a baby elephant was rescued from an abandoned well by Forest Department personnel in Basiapada forest under Jujumura police limits in Sambalpur after a two-hour-long arduous operation.

According to sources, the baby elephant fell into the uncovered well last night while a herd of elephants was passing through the forest. Hearing the baby elephant's and mother elephant's distress trumpets, the villagers rushed to the scene and immediately notified the Forest Department.

Because the mother elephant stood guard near the well all night, the rescue operation could not begin until the morning. A JCB machine was used to dig a pit parallel to the well, the wall of which was also broken, allowing the elephant to escape.

"It rained last night." The calf fell into the well while crossing the forest. "Our team safely rescued it," said Sambalpur DFO Biswanath Nilambar.
