Baripada: In a new case of human-animal conflict, two Forest Department employees were gravely injured on Monday after being attacked by a wild elephant in a village in Odisha's Mayurbhanj district.

The incident occurred near Benapura village in the district's Baripada division's Betonati forest range.

The victims have been identified as Badampur forester Pradip Dehury and contractual protection assistant Jateen Kisku.

According to Baripada DFO Santosh Kumar Joshi, both injured forest personnel have been admitted to hospital for treatment as a result of the event.

The event occurred as forest authorities were attempting to chase out an elephant calf that had entered a residence in the village, according to sources. Another adult elephant roaming the vicinity raced to the scene and attacked the two, severely injuring them.

The two were taken to PRM Medical College and Hospital in Baripada for treatment right away.
