Bhubaneswar: Eleven new Indian wetlands, including three in Odisha, have been designated as having international significance with the goal of preserving and protecting the ecosystem. They have been given the esteemed designation of Ramsar sites.

The three additional wetlands in Odisha that have been added to the list, according to government sources, are Tampara Lake in the Ganjam district, Hirakud Reservoir in the Sambalpur district, and Ansupa Lake in the Cuttack district.

On Saturday, Bhupender Yadav, the Union Minister for Environment, Forests, and Climate Change, tweeted about it. With the addition of 11 more wetlands, India now has 75 sites that have been recognised by Ramsar.

It is important to note that earlier in August, the Centre designated 10 additional wetlands as Ramsar sites, including Satkosia Gorge in Odisha.

According to the Ramsar Convention, an environmental agreement created by UNESCO in 1971 and named after the Iranian city of "Ramsar," the Ramsar site is a wetland of significant global significance.
