Bhubaneswar: On Monday, School and Mass Education Minister Sameer Dash ordered an investigation into the alleged punishment meted out to seven female students at Bapuji High School in Odisha's Balangir district's Patnagarh area.

Dash told the reporters that the investigation would be carried out by Patnagarh Community Education Officer Shankar Prasad Majhi.

The girls were reportedly knocked out after a teacher forced them do sit-ups as a punishment for being late for a prayer session. They were then sent to the Patnagarh Hospital for treatment. "When the girls were brought to the hospital, they were in bad shape. "Their health is stable after preliminary treatment," stated Pitabash Sha, Patnagarh Sub-Divisional Medical Officer.

Following claims that an 11-year-old youngster died after being thrashed by his teacher in Bargarh district, the Odisha government made schools punishment-free zones in 2010.

According to Majhi, schools have been proclaimed punishment-free by the state government, and if any teacher or school personnel is discovered pushing pupils, the appropriate legal action would be taken.
