Kendrapada: From Sunday, Bhitarkanika National Park in Odisha's Kendrapada district will be closed to tourists and visitors for three months (May 1 to July 31) due to the mating season of estuarine crocodiles.

The ban is frequently applied at the wildlife sanctuary's Bhitarkanika, Dangamala, and Ragadapati forest blocks to allow crocodiles to lay eggs on the surface without being disturbed. Tourists are prohibited because human interaction might make crocodiles aggressive.

Local forest residents are also not allowed to enter the area to collect honey or firewood.

Bhitarkanika, in particular, is home to 70% of India's estuary crocodiles, or saltwater crocodiles.
