Berhampur: On Saturday, a boat carrying approximately 25 passengers became lost at Chilika Lake owing to severe fog.

On the festival of Makar Sankranti, the boat was ferrying believers to Kalijai Island, believed to be the residence of Goddess Kalijai, the patron deity of fishermen. The boatman was unable to see the temple due to a dense fog that reduced visibility to 50 meters this morning.

Following the event, the local government temporarily halted boat services from Balugaon. "The stranded boat has arrived at Kalijai Island. We have decided to discontinue boat service for the time being because visibility is still poor," Balugaon SDPO Manas Ranjan Barik told the reporters.

The India Meteorological Department had issued a yellow warning for severe fog in Angul, Dhenkanal, Cuttack, Keonjhar, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Khurda, Nayagarh, and Kandhamal, among other places. During the next 24 hours, dense fog is also possible in Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Ganjam, Khurda, Cuttack, Angul, and Dhenkanal.
