CB to probe model Soumya death case, orders HC
Cuttack: The Orissa High Court asked the Crime Branch (CB) on Friday to investigate the strange death of aspiring model Soumya Ranjan Panigrahi, who was discovered hanging at his home in Nandan Vihar in Odisha's capital on January 30, 2022, and submit a report within three months.
The directive came in response to a request by Soumya's sister, Soubhagyalakshmi, who claimed that no progress had been made in the case despite the court ordering the Bhubaneswar DCP in February last year to expedite the inquiry and take action within three weeks.
Notably, a note presumably written by him referenced a girl with whom Soumya was allegedly involved. During the COVID lockdown, he met the girl in a gym after returning home from Mumbai, where he was pursuing a modeling career. His family has since blamed her for his death.
On February 1, 2022, his sister filed a complaint with Infocity police, alleging that he was upset by the girl's affair with another guy. She had filed a complaint with the HC on February 19, 2022, alleging a lack of cooperation from police, and the court then asked the DCP to report the deceased's kin on the progress of the investigation within three weeks. "When the family received no information on actions being made by police to solve the issue, she knocked on the court's doors again, which directed CB to take over the investigation," the family's lawyer Byomkesh Tripathy explained.
