CM announces COVID-19 aid for Odisha newspaper hawkers

Bhubaneswar: Chief minister Naveen Patnaik provided COVID support and accident compensation for newspaper hawkers in the state on Thursday in an effort to bring them under social security.

The state government is taking steps, according to the chief minister, to cover newspaper hawkers under social security for the difficult task they have been undertaking throughout the COVID outbreak. As part of this, the state government will provide each of them with Rs 6,000 in special COVID assistance. Later in the day, he will disburse compensation to 7,259 hawkers totaling Rs 4.35 lakh.

He also declared that hawkers would be compensated if they were involved in an accident. The government will give Rs 2 lakh in compensation to the family of a hawker who dies in an accident, and Rs 1 lakh in compensation to the family of a hawker who dies naturally.

The chief minister announced that any hawker who loses two parts of his body in a tragedy will be entitled to Rs 80,000 in compensation and Rs 40,000 in compensation if only one part is lost.

Naveen stated that a complete database of hawkers is being established, and that they will be given an identity card to help them with their business. He further mentioned that the government is aiming to construct work sheds for them at the district level.

It should be mentioned that the chief minister has launched various efforts for Mission Shakti members in the recent two days, including livelihood aid for BSKY card users, house repair money for the poor and needy, and several initiatives for BSKY card holders.
