Rourkela: On Tuesday, three days before the FIH Men's Hockey World Cup 2023 in Odisha's Rourkela, a contractual laborer was electrocuted at Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium.

Gopal Tirkey of Bhagatola village in Tainsar panchayat of Lathikata block has been identified as the deceased.

According to sources, he collapsed after coming into contact with a live wire while working at one of the stadium's gates and was brought to Rourkela government hospital, where medics pronounced him dead. He was hired by a company called Dipshika Enterprises.

Notably, this stadium will host 20 of the 44 World Cup matches. On January 13, host India will face Spain in its first match.

The hockey stadium, which cost Rs 261 crore to build, was inaugurated on January 6 by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. It was erected in a record 15 months and has a seating capacity of 20,000 people.
