Crime Branch to probe Gobinda Sahu suicide case
Bhubaneswar: Sunil Kumar Bansal, Director General of Police (DGP), ordered a Crime Branch investigation into the suicide of Gobinda Sahu, the principal accused in the Mamita Meher murder case, inside Kantabanji jail in Balangir district on Tuesday.
According to reports, a team of CID-CB officers led by DSP Bijay Mallick and three other officials has gone for Kantbanji to take over the probe. The squad also includes forensic and cyber professionals and detectives from the state police photo bureau.
This occurred as the opposition BJP and Congress demanded a CBI investigation into his death, citing a huge plot to shield high-profile leaders in the case.
Notably, this morning, Sahu was discovered hanging inside the jail grounds before his appearance in a municipal court. He was transported to Kantabanji Sub-divisional Hospital by jail officials, who ruled him dead.
Previously, Sambalpur Prisons range DIG Anasaya Jena was tasked with investigating the circumstances behind Sahu's suicide.
Mamita, a resident of Balangir's Turekela block, was employed as a teacher at the Sunshine English Medium School in Mahaling, Kalahandi district. On October 8, 2021, the 24-year-old teacher went missing. Mamita's family members filed a police report, alleging that the school's managing committee head Sahu was involved in her disappearance. Mamita's burnt remains were excavated from the construction site of a stadium near the school on October 19.
Sahu was later apprehended for kidnapping and murdering Mamita with the assistance of his driver, Radheshyam Chandi.
Sahu reportedly saw Mamita at Chandotara on October 8. He then drove her to Bhawanipatna to go shopping. Later, both proceeded to the Manikeswari temple, and on the way back, he strangled her to death in the car's back seat.
The murder sparked widespread political outrage, with opposition parties stating that Sahu was a close associate of former Minister of State for Home Dibya Shankar Mishra, who was accused of protecting Sahu.
Ranjit Sahu, the principal of Mahaling College, and Kruti Chandan, a management committee member, were arrested earlier this month on suspicion of influencing witnesses in the murder case.
