Villagers' Demand For JSW Project To Be Moved From Its Current Location, Congress supports

Paradip: AICC general secretary and Odisha in-charge A Chellakumar has denounced police violence against villagers protesting against JSW's proposed steel plant in Dhinkia and backed their demand for the project to be moved from its current location.

Chellakumar told the media on Saturday that many locals had fled the area and were afraid to return due to police abuse. He questioned how the administration could visit the region and terrorise the residents before an MoU had been signed.

The Congress spokesman claimed that the state administration, led by chief minister Naveen Patnaik, was snatching land from peasants under the guise of industrialization. Instead of establishing the industries, the government was profiting by selling the land to another person or industry at a premium price, he added.

Chellakumar stated that the Congress will take police action to the National Human Rights Commission and that the party will also discuss the issue in the Assembly.

He led the Congress's nine-member fact-finding delegation to Dhinkia in Jagatsinghpur. Others who followed Chellakumar included veteran party leader Narasingha Mishra and working president Chiranjeev Biswal.

Mishra stated that his party agrees with the villagers' demand for the police force to be withdrawn, cases against the people to be dropped, and those arrested to be released.

Despite the fact that his party was not opposed to industrialisation, he urged that the government relocate the project from its current location to places where no displacement of people would be necessary.
