Bhubaneswar: After crocodiles were sighted in floodwater that had engulfed numerous villages in Odisha's Jagatsinghpur and Jajpur districts, fear spread in some of these communities.

A crocodile was spotted in the floodwater of the Paika river near Kathakote in the Kujang area of Jagatsinghpur district on Wednesday, frightening neighbouring villagers who are stranded as a result of the inundation of wide areas.

The Paika River is overflowing near the Kathakote area due to the large inflow of water from the Mahanadi. Following a breach in the embankment, several settlements were marooned by gushing water.

After a video showing the lizard floating in the floodwater went popular on social media, the locals of the nearby villages are in a panic. The crocodile might infiltrate the settlement and hurt them, they feared. Those who were submerged in floodwater sought immediate evacuation measures.

According to sources, the crocodile is being sent away from the area so that it can enter the deep water of the river as necessary by forest department personnel.

A similar report was received from the Jajpur district, where two large reptiles were observed in the Dasarathpur block, inciting crocodile dread. Two enormous crocodiles were observed in the swollen river by several locals of the village of Dharampur.

The people speculated that the water may have allowed the crocodiles to reach the river bank. They demanded that the reptile be captured right away.
