Bhubaneswar: Prabodh Tirkey, a former hockey captain for India, formally joined the Congress on Monday in Bhubaneswar in the presence of top party officials.
In the presence of OPCC President Sarat Pattanayak, Party State In-Charge A Chellakumar, State Unit Campaign Committee Chairman Bijay Patnaik, and Former PCC Chief Niranjan Patnaik at the Congress Bhawan in Bhubaneswar, the world hockey star joined the party.
In addition to Tirkey, a number of other individuals, including Prasanta Champati, the former Bhubaneswar Organizational District Secretary for the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), joined the Congress. Earlier in the day, Champati was dismissed from the ruling party for engaging in anti-party behavior.
Tirkey claimed that Rahul Gandhi's outstanding efforts had a significant impact on and inspired him to join the Congress. Furthermore, he added, "the philosophy of the Congress has always had an impact on me.
Prabodh, a native of Sundargarh district's tribally dominant Lulkidihi Village within Balishankra Block, is eager to run in the upcoming Assembly election from the Talsara constituency.
Tirkey said he wants to run from Talsara to represent the locals and work for the area's development. He lamented that the tribal members in his area are ignored because they are not receiving any benefits from government programs.
Senior Congress members Chellakumar and Pattanayak expressed optimism that Tirkey's party membership would improve the party's organization in the state in time for the upcoming elections.
Prabodh, who was born on October 6th, 1984, made his Junior Asia Cup debut in 2000. Before eventually becoming the captain of the India senior squad, he served as the national captain of the sub-junior, junior, and India-A teams.
He competed for India in the 2007 Asia Cup in Chennai, which they won. He has been capped 135 times internationally.
In 2001 and 2009, Tirkey received the Ekalavya Puraskar and the Biju Patnaik State Sports Award, respectively.
