Former Odisha MLA Anup Sai granted bail in double murder case

Jharsuguda: Anup Sai, a former MLA for Odisha, was granted conditional bail on Thursday by the Chhattisgarh High Court after being given life in jail for the 2016 murder of a mother and her young daughter.

In connection with the shocking double homicide of a woman and her 14-year-old daughter in 2016, a Raigarh district sessions court in Chhattisgarh sentenced the former Brajarajnagar MLA to life in prison in April of this year.

Burdhan Toppo, another suspect who was detained in connection with the crime, has been found not guilty by the court. Toppo was the former legislator's driver at the time.

In connection with the 2016 murders of Kalpana Das and her young daughter at Hamirpur forest in Chhattisgarh's Raigarh district, the former MLA and his driver were detained in February 2020. Around 700 people had been questioned by the Chhattisgarh police in relation to the case.

The former MLA was having an affair with Kalpana, according to the police. He supposedly resided in a Bhubaneswar building with Kalpana and her daughter.

Sai allegedly plotted to have Kalpana killed because she persisted on getting married and demanded a piece of his property. In May 2016, he reportedly drove Kalpana and her daughter to Chhattisgarh. The mother-daughter pair was attacked in the Hamirpur jungles and killed. After a year, the authorities were able to determine the victims' identities, according to sources.
