Two minor brothers killed, parents injured in elephant attack in Odisha

Jharsuguda: In a jumbo attack on Friday in Odisha's Jharsuguda district, two young brothers were killed by a herd of wild elephants while their parents were seriously injured.

The event reportedly happened early in the morning close to Bhaunra hamlet in the Kirmira block of the district's Jharsuguda forest range.

Dhananjay Satnami, age 9, and Abhay Satnami, age 11, were identified as the deceased, and Umesh Ram Satnami and his wife, Leherabai Satnami, as the victims.

According to sources, the victims, who were from a Chhattisgarh hamlet, had just moved to Bhaunra village in Jharsuguda to work in a brick kiln.

The injured couple has been brought to the Jharsuguda District Headquarters Hospital for medical attention.

When forest officials arrived on the scene, the remains were already retrieved and taken to a hospital for an autopsy. The neighbourhood police investigated the event.

The inhabitants of adjacent villages are in a state of panic as a result of the presence of over six elephants camped out in the Bagdihi forest.
