Odisha CM Announces Social Security Net For Newspaper Hawkers

Bhubaneswar: On Tuesday, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik launched a social security plan for Odisha's newspaper hawkers.

Hawkers registered with the Odisha Unorganised Social Security Board will be covered under this scheme.

In the event of death owing to an accident, the hawkers would receive Rs 2 lakh ex gratia, while death due to natural causes will receive Rs 1 lakh. For lifelong disability, financial assistance will be provided in the amount of Rs 1.5 lakh; for the loss of both limbs, financial assistance will be provided in the amount of Rs 80,000; and for the loss of one leg, financial assistance will be provided in the amount of Rs 40,000.

Because hawkers endured financial hardship during COVID, when people stopped subscribing to newspapers for fear of spreading the virus, the CM's Relief Fund would grant Rs 3,000 in two instalments to registered newspaper hawkers.

Work sheds will also be provided at the sub-division and district levels, since they confront problems at work.

According to the Chief Minister, the Information and Public Relations Department will create a database to scrutinise hawkers and issue ID cards.
