Congress Throws Eggs At BJD MP

Bhubaneswar: On Thursday, eggs were thrown at another BJD leader in the state by opposition protesters. When Congress workers threw eggs at BJD leader and Rajya Sabha MP Munna Khan's vehicle in Darutheng, on the outskirts of the state capital, it was his turn.

Khan was at Darutheng to participate in a programme to distribute Biju Swasthya Kalyan Yojana (BSKY) smart health cards, accompanied by BJD Khurda district president Bibhuti Bhusan Balabantaray.

Khan's vehicle was attacked by Congress workers along the route. Soon later, a brawl broke out between Congress and BJD personnel. According to accounts, several members of both the government and opposition parties were injured in the brawl.

The Congress claimed that the BSKY health card scheme was a "private" function of the ruling BJD, and that local MLA Sura Routray and local MP Aparajita Sarangi were not invited, although Khan and Balabantaray were.

No government officials or local leaders, according to the party, were present at the event.

Routray decried the attack on Congress employees and warned that the party's demonstrations will pick up in the following days.

Both inside and outside the Odisha Assembly, the opposition has criticised the ruling BJD. Several BJD politicians were pelted with eggs across the state in the days leading up to the Winter Session over the Mamita Meher murder case.

On December 10, Congress activists protesting the Mamita Meher murder case and demanding the resignation of Minister of State for Home Dibya Shankar Mishra were lathi-charged by Odisha police, who chased them inside the Congress Bhawan, prompting the Congress to accuse them of "police trespass" and "brutality."

Routray has urged that the event be investigated by the courts. "The situation should be thoroughly investigated, and the errant police officers should face severe consequences." Otherwise, the Congress's objections would escalate in the next days," he said.

Taraprasad Bahinipati, a Congress MLA from Jeypore, gheraoed the Koraput SP office in protest of the December 10 incident. "We shall greet the CP with eggs if justice is delayed." "Wherever CM Naveen Patnaik travels, he will not be spared," he said.
