Heavy Rain in Odisha From Tonight As Cyclone Asani Passes By Andhra Coast

Bhubaneswar: The maximum intensity of Cyclone Asani has passed, and it is expected to decrease gradually. On Tuesday, India Meteorological Department (IMD) DG Mrutyunjay Mohapatra told the media that after approaching the Andhra Pradesh coast tonight evening, the system will shift track and pass along/off the Odisha coast.

"By tomorrow, the system is expected to transition from severe to cyclonic storm. By May 12, it will have progressed to a profound depression. The surface wind speed in the water will be between 50 and 60 kilometers per hour under its effect. Similarly, beginning today, certain coastal regions may have moderate to heavy rainfall," he predicted.

From Tuesday night, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in a few locations, with isolated extremely heavy falls over north coastal AP and heavy rainfall in isolated locations over coastal Odisha, according to the MeT office. In the next 24 hours, heavy rainfall is extremely likely to occur in Malkangiri, Koraput, Gajapati, Ganjam, and Puri.

On May 12, light to moderate rainfall is expected over coastal portions of Odisha and West Bengal, with severe rainfall in isolated spots. Squally winds with gusts up to 60 kmph are expected to continue along and off the Odisha coast till May 12.

"The cyclone is presently moving extremely slowly and is predicted to linger over that area for some time," Skymet, a private weather forecaster, said. "This means more rain and thundershowers tomorrow and the day after tomorrow, but on a much lighter note."

Several weather agencies and models have predicted that storm Asani will hit the Andhra coast. It was previously expected that the system would not reach the ground.

"Severe Cyclonic Storm Asani will scrape the northeast coast of Andhra Pradesh before turning NE and swiftly fading starting Tuesday night or Wednesday," said Senior Meteorologist Jason Nicholls. Heavy rain and strong gusts are expected along the coasts of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu through Thursday."
