Hirakud water reservoir opens 4 more gates to release floodwater

Sambalpur: The Hirakud reservoir in Sambalpur, Odisha, has been filling up with water since last Wednesday. On Friday, the officials opened six more sluice gates to let the extra floodwater out. Four gates were opened this morning by the reservoir authority.

Sources claim that the increased rainfall in the upper catchment areas of the Mahanadi River has caused the reservoir's water level to rise.

Twenty sluice gates are now being used by the dam to release floodwater.

To relieve pressure on the dam on Thursday, the reservoir authorities opened 10 sluice gates twice.

On July 18, the Hirakud Dam let go the first floodwaters of this season into the Mahanadi River. Low-lying residents have been advised against entering the river.
