Hockey World Cup: stadium construction budget in Rourkela and Bhubaneswar exceeds Rs 800 Cr
Bhubaneswar: Due to a sharp increase in steel prices, the price of building the Bisra Munda international hockey stadium in Rourkela, which will host the Odisha Men's Hockey World Cup in 2023, has increased from 120 crore to 180 crore.
On Thursday, the cabinet approved the increased project budget of Rs 875 crore for creating the new hockey stadium and building sports facilities at Kalinga Stadium. The four-yearly world championship would be held there from January 13 to January 29.
According to a press release, the Kalinga Stadium is being upgraded with several facilities, including the first indoor athletic stadium in India, an indoor aquatic centre, a tennis court, a hockey HPC building, and lodging options.
While the Cabinet approved the project on May 8, 2021, at a total cost of Rs 432.454 crore (all taxes and IDCO charges included), the design and safety parameters were upgraded to make the structured disaster resilient based on site conditions and technical vetting by experts including IT Bombay and stadium experts from national/international federations.
"The quantities of structural components were affected by this upgrade. The price increases for materials like steel, POL, aluminium, etc. are also a key factor in the overall project cost increase. Additionally, according to the statement, an increase in the GST rates from 12 to 18% has helped drive up the price of the project.
