Dilip Tirkey elected as Hockey India president

Bhubaneswar: Dilip Tirkey, a former captain of the Indian men's hockey team from Odisha, was chosen as Hockey India's (HI) president by a unanimous vote on Friday.

Dilip was the front-runner for the position, with Rakesh Katyal, the head of Uttar Pradesh Hockey, and Bhola Nath Singh, the representative of Hockey Jharkhand, also in the running for the national federation election, which is set for October 1. After his other candidates withdrew, he was elected as the new president of HI.

The Fédération Internationale de Hockey (FIH) stated in a letter that candidates will be assumed to have been elected without opposition where the number of candidates running for a post is equal to or fewer than the number of positions. In light of this, it remarked, "We are glad to see that the Executive Board of Hockey India stands elected as has been placed on the Hockey India website and that the posts election was unanimous for all positions."

It acknowledged the Committee of Administrators' (CoA) successful efforts over the last few months to reinstate Hockey India's democratically elected governing council. "We are happy that the election process is over and that a democratic body has been established. We congratulate Dr. Dilip Tirkey, Bhola Nath Singh, and Sekar J. Manoharan and look forward to cooperating closely with them, the statement continued.

Bhola Nath, president of Hockey Jharkhand, had also put his name in the running for secretary general while Dilip was running for national federation office on behalf of the Hockey Association of Odisha. Sekar J Manoharan, president of the Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu, is the only applicant for the position of treasurer.
