Nayagarh's 'Danda Jatra' takes a violent turn; one killed and more than ten injured

Nayagarh: On Wednesday night, during Danda Jatra in Odisha's Nayagarh district, one person was killed and more than ten were gravely injured in fighting between two groups of people.

Naveen Parida of Durgaprasad village was identified as the dead.

Two parties, one from Durgaprasad village and the other from Deulapalli village, were leading separate processions with their respective deities when a heated exchange occurred at the Sindhuria village Shiv shrine.

Parida was allegedly beaten to death by numerous Deulapalli village youths after that. During the ensuing violent fights, about ten Durgaprasad villagers were seriously injured and were taken to the Nayagarh District Headquarters Hospital.

While attempting to bring the situation under control, the IIC of the Nayagarh Town police station and three other officers were hurt.

Parida's body was discovered near a pond in Deulapalli hamlet by police. It was sent for a post-mortem examination.

In the villages, police have been deployed.
