Bhubaneswar: The state administration has chosen to employ extra emergency vehicles since the current fleet is woefully inadequate to meet the needs of the citizens.

Chief Secretary SC Mahapatra presided over a high-level meeting on Friday where the decision was made. He instructed that the new system be fully equipped in terms of technology, people, and real-time vehicle location as the emergency call numbers 100 for police and 101 for fire services are merged with the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) number 112.

According to TNIE, Additional Chief Secretary of the Home Department Sanjeev Chopra said that the emergency response centre currently has 124 call takers and 551 vehicles to give services. He said that the government has set a deadline of the end of August for integrating emergency services from several agencies under the single 112 phone number.

There were 8,708 distress calls received in August, according to the center's logs. About 7,957 of them had to do with law enforcement, while 585 had to do with firefighting. It also routed 1,915 calls to emergency medical services.
