Odisha: Industrialist Mahima Mishra appears before CBI

Bhubaneswar: Odisha industrialist Mahimananda Mishra appeared before the CBI on Friday in its Bhubaneswar headquarters following the CBI raid on his workplace and home.

Three people have reportedly been detained by the CBI in this regard, including contractor Sumant Rout and chief mechanical engineer Saroj Das of the Paradip Port Authority, according to reports. During the raid on Thursday, Das and Rout were questioned by the Delhi-based CBI team.

The CBI carried out raids on Mishra's properties, including his home and office, which were located in various parts of Cuttack and Paradip. In Cuttack's Odia Bazaar and Paradip's Link Road and Badapadi offices of Odisha Stevedores Limited, searches were conducted.

Despite the fact that the cause of the raid has not yet been determined, reports imply that it may have something to do with alleged irregularities at the Paradip Port Trust.

According to additional sources, CBI investigators questioned contractor Sumant Rout and chief mechanical engineer Saroj Kumar Das at The 100 Millions, the port's guest house, in relation to a bribery allegation. The contractor allegedly offered a bribe to the senior official. One hundred and eighty thousand rupees were taken from the engineer's office, and fifty thousand rupees more from the contractor.

Notably, the Orissa High Court in November 2019 granted the industrialist bail in connection with the murder of Mahendra Swain, a manager of the Hyderabad-based stevedoring firm Seaways Shipping and Logistics Limited. He is charged with paying assassins to kill him.

On December 25, 2016, the Immigration Police of Thailand detained Mishra in Bangkok. Mishra, some of his family, and a few security personnel entered Thailand from Nepal on a tourist visa, according to the Bangkok Post. Following the murder of Swain, Mishra and his companion Basant Bal fled to Kathmandu on a 15-day tourist visa, according to confirmation from the Odisha police.
