Odisha's Koraput Coffee in process to Get Its Own GI Tag

Bhubaneswar: TDCCOL (Tribal Development Co-operative Corporation of Odisha Ltd) has begun the process of obtaining an exclusive geographical indication (GI) for Koraput coffee.

Currently, the Koraput varietal is listed in the Andhra Pradesh GI for Araku coffee.

Mansi Nimbhal, managing director of TDCCOL, stated that given the current market position of Koraput coffee, it has become critical to obtain its own GI certification.

On March 1, 2019, the Coffee Board of India, under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, obtained the tag for 'Araku Valley Arabica,' which includes Odisha's coffee.

According to the board, the coffee is cultivated in the same elevation (3,000 to 5,300 feet above sea level), soil, and climatic conditions in both Andhra Pradesh and sections of Odisha, with the bulk grown in Koraput, as well as Kandhamal, Rayagada, Keonjhar, Gajapati, and Kalahandi.

The corporation has told the Coffee Board that Odisha's coffee will have its own GI. "Since Koraput coffee already has a geographical indicator, we are aiming to establish its uniqueness in comparison to that grown in the Araku valley," Nimbhal was quoted as saying by media.

Koraput is a non-traditional coffee-growing region in India, according to the coffee map. Arabica coffee is currently grown in the districts of Koraput, Nandapur, Semiliguda, Pottangi, Dasmantpur, Lamtaput, and Laxmipur.
