Bhubaneswar: On the occasion of Makar Sankranti, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik exchanged greetings.

"We are commemorating several festivals across India that represent India's robust cultural diversity. PM Modi tweeted, "My greetings on these celebrations."

While Makar Sankranti is celebrated in West India, it is known as Pongal in the south and Lohri in the north. Other names for the same celebration include Bhogi, Uttarayan, Maghi Bihu, and Khichdi.

"On the occasion of Makar Sankranti, my deepest greetings and congratulations to the people of the state." Naveen tweeted, "I pray near Lord Jagannath for the happiness and prosperity of all."

On the festival of Makar Sankranti, which symbolises the Sun's transition into ever-lengthening days, people in Odisha take a traditional bath in rivers and pay visits to temples.

However, because of the unexpected increase of COVID-19 cases, gatherings at river banks/ghats/ponds/seashores or near other water bodies have been forbidden across the state.

Makar Mela is strictly prohibited, and all houses of worship will be closed to the general public on this day to prevent big crowds from spreading the virus.

The state's Special Relief Commissioner has also made it illegal to hold gatherings of more than 100 persons. Celebrations and gatherings in public locations are prohibited until January 16.
