Malkangiri: Unmotorable roads in remote sections of the district continue to deny tribals access to basic health care, with the latest incidence of a pregnant woman being carried to an ambulance on a cot reported from Chitrakonda.

On Monday, Jema Khila of Kuniguda village in Chitrakonda block complained of labour pains, according to sources. Her relatives summoned the 102 ambulance service to transport her to the hospital.

Despite the fact that the ambulance arrived in the region, the driver stopped the vehicle 5 kilometres from Kuniguda because the road had become muddy and treacherous as a result of the rain. Jema's family members and some villagers carried her on a cot all the way to the ambulance, which safely transported her to the Chitrakonda Hospital.

“In the village, these kinds of things happen all the time. Whenever we highlight the matter, political leaders promise that a pucca road would be built. “However, it has yet to materialise,” a villager stated.

In a similar occurrence in June, a patient in need of emergency care had to be carried 3 kilometres on a stretcher to an ambulance before being transferred to a hospital in Malkangiri's Swabhiman Anchal area.
