Remain safe and focus on family’s safety: Odisha CM urges people

Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik made a plea for people to take precautions for their own safety as well as the protection of their family members on Friday due to the likelihood that a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal may cause extremely heavy rain in various districts of Odisha.

As of tonight, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Bhadrak districts are expected to have severe rain periods. I urge people not to panic and to instead heed the administration's instructions.

Additionally, Naveen stated that the government of Odisha values "every life as precious."

For the Keonjhar, Bhadrak, Balasore, and Mayurbhanj districts until 8.30 am on Saturday, the MeT office has issued a red alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20 cm) at a few areas with isolated really severe falls (>20 cm). A few locations in Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Angul, Deogarh, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Boudh, Balangir, and Jajpur are also likely to get heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20 cm). During this time, severe rains may also occur in a few locations in Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nuapada, Ganjam, Rayagada, Gajapati, Nawarangpur, Koraput, Malkangiri, and Puri.

Up till midnight, squally winds with gusts of up to 75 kmph are expected to blow over the northern Bay of Bengal, along, and off the coast of Odisha. After that, it continued, the wind speed would gradually drop, reaching 35-45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph by the evening and 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph by Saturday morning over the same region.

Notably, due to the anticipated heavy rain, the Bhadrak administration had ordered the closure of all schools and Anganwadi centres on Friday.

The responsible officials have also been told not to let tourists enter Chandipur, Talasari, Kasafala, Dagara, and Panchlingeswar on Friday and Saturday by Balasore collector Dattatreya Bhaosaheb Sindhe. Also discouraged from doing so are overnight stays at these locations for tourists.
