Balangir: The Inspector-in-Charge (IIC) of the Sindhekela police station has been suspended by the Director General of Police (DGP) following his detention in a bribery case.

"Behera has been suspended with effect from the date of his detention (December 5) in relation to a Vigilance complaint registered at the Sambalpur Vigilance police station under Section 7 of the PC Act." During his suspension, he will remain under the disciplinary jurisdiction of the Balangir SP and will draw the SA and DA as permissible under Rule 90 of the Orissa Service Code, according to an office order.

According to the information, the IIC, Alok Kumar Behera, was arrested on Sunday by Vigilance officers on suspicion of receiving a bribe of Rs 25,000 from an accused in order to show him leniency in a case.

The IIC had threatened to draw the accused's wife into the investigation and arrest her as well. The cop sought a bribe from the man in order to save his wife.
