Six killed, 40 injured in Kalinga Ghat road accident, CM Mourns
Berhampur: A tourist bus overturned at Durgaprasad under Bhanjanagar police limits in Odisha's Ganjam district late Tuesday, killing six people, including four women from West Bengal. Over 40 others were injured.
According to sources, the tragedy occurred when the driver failed to negotiate a steep corner and collided with an electric post before turning turtle owing to brake failure while en route to Visakhapatnam after visitors from Howrah's Udaynarayanpur area visited Daringbadi in Kandhamal district. There were 77 people on board.
Bhanjanagar and G Udayagiri police units rushed to the scene and began the rescue effort. Later, firefighters were called to assist. The search and rescue operation lasted until Wednesday morning.
Supriya Denre, Sanjeet Patra, Rima Denre, Mausumi Denra, Barnali Manna, and a cook have been identified as the deceased.
The victims were sent to a nearby hospital for treatment. Due to their urgent health conditions, 14 of them were sent to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur.
While Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has expressed his condolences for the deaths of visitors, Transport Minister Padmanabha Behera has demanded an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
