Berhampur: Police nabbed a man on Wednesday for burning his sweetheart alive on Tuesday evening in Pratapur village in Ganjam district.

Krushna Chandra Sahu of Goudasahi of Pratapur village, Purushottampur police limits, has been named as the culprit.

Suryamani Pradhan, Purushottampur SDPO, told the media that the woman Subhasmita Khadanga of Kalamba village, Polasara block, had a one-year love affair with Krushna Chandra, according to her deathbed confession.

When they had a brief squabble on Tuesday evening near an abandoned home in Patrapur village, they had a talk. He became infuriated and poured spirit on her body, then lit a matchstick and flung it.

The people raced to the abandoned house, retrieved the woman, and admitted her to the CHC in Purushttoampur as the woman, who had 90 percent burn damage, screamed for aid. Police took her to MKCH Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur after receiving information, where she succumbed to her injuries.

“We have apprehended the individual based on the deceased's dying declaration, and he will be forwarded to the court later today,” the SDPO added.
