Bhubaneswar: The Integrated Infrastructure Complex (IIC), which is being built in Odisha's Khurda to provide social security to seniors and children with special needs, will soon include a top-notch laboratory for visually impaired kids.

According to sources, this was determined at a conference to examine the status of IICs in the ten districts of Khurda, Cuttack, Puri, Kandhamal, Sambalpur, Bhadrak, Malkangiri, Sundargarh, Ganjam, and Nabarangpur.

They said that Bhaskar Sarma, commissioner of the Social Security and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (SSEPD) Department, conducted the review meeting lately. The IICs are being implemented by the department under the Odisha Government’s 5T plan.

The state administration gave its approval for the first phase of the IIC building in 18 districts last year. These facilities will include nursing homes and special schools for pupils who are deaf or hard of hearing.

The centres in Khurda, Ganjam, Sambalpur, and Kandhamal are anticipated to be operational by the end of this month, while several are still under construction.

Each visually impaired student enrolling at the IIC in Khurda will receive a reading device and related technology, such as a Kindle, in an effort to give better learning materials.

In addition to this, a single window interface will be created for the IICs to store records for all agencies, NGOs, teaching staff, non-teaching employees, and kids attending special schools.

The IICs will eventually become "Centres of Excellence." IICs will offer sufficient cultural centres, sports facilities, and other extracurricular activity facilities for the general development of seniors as well as youngsters with special needs.
