Cuttack: On Saturday, the body of a theft suspect who escaped from police custody and jumped into the Mahanadi was recovered from the river near Jobra barrage in Odisha's Cuttack.

The deceased, identified as Sankarshan Behera alias Bablu, escaped from Cantonment police custody on Friday.

His family members were notified after his body was recovered from the river. They recognized the body as Bablu's.

Bablu was brought to the police station in connection with a theft case, according to sources. He shoved some police officers and fled on Friday during interrogation.

Family members claimed that the police arrested Bablu three days ago despite the fact that he was not involved in any crime. He was initially detained at Bidanasi Police Station before being transferred to Cantonment Police Station. They also claimed that Bablu escaped from their custody as a result of torture.

According to a police official, an investigation will be launched to determine the circumstances surrounding the accused's escape from custody. Based on the findings of the investigation, appropriate action will be taken.
