Trilochan Kanungo, a veteran politician and former Jagatsinghpur MP, died on Friday while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Odisha's capital. He was 83.

Bhubaneswar: Trilochan Kanungo, a veteran politician and former Jagatsinghpur MP, died on Friday while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Odisha's capital. He was 83.

According to sources, the three-time MLA and one-time MP from the BJD has been hospitalized since March 30. Around 7 a.m., he breathed his last.

Kanungo was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1999 from the Jagatsinghpur Parliamentary constituency. He rose to prominence as the Mayor of Cuttack (1979-1980 and 1992-1995), a position he held twice. He was regarded as a learned politician. He presided over the second Odisha Finance Commission.

Kanungo was a student leader and the president of Ravenshaw College and Utkal University in the 1960s.

He is the elder brother of Panchanan Kanungo, the former finance minister who joined the Congress in 2019.

Kanungo had been living in Cuttack's Sheikh Bazaar area for several years.
