Balasore: After five students from an Odisha residential school in Soro tested positive for Japanese Encephalitis (JE), four more inmates were transferred to the district headquarters hospital (DHH) as their condition worsened.

Fear of a viral brain infection gripped the area on Monday after five students from Purubai Kanyashram in Soro tested positive for JE. According to sources, the five girls, along with some other inmates, were immediately transferred to the DHH for treatment.

Five samples from the 26 inmates undergoing treatment at the residential school tested positive for Japanese Encephalitis, a viral brain infection caused by mosquito bites.

Following that, on Monday night, the condition of four other students being treated at Soro hospital deteriorated. They were also transferred to the DHH, they claimed.

It should be noted that three Kanyashram inmates became ill unexpectedly and were admitted to the hospital. After complaining of diarrhea, severe headache, and nausea, 24 other inmates were admitted to Soro hospital.

On Saturday, a Class 10 student from the Dahanimara area of NIlagiri died in the hospital while receiving treatment.

Later, family members of the deceased girl claimed that Kanyashram officials failed to notify them of her death in a timely manner.

It should be noted that a severe outbreak of JE and acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) with high case fatality was reported from the state's Malkangiri district in 2016, resulting in many deaths.
