Bhubaneswar: The Hirakud Dam authorities in Odisha's Sambalpur district closed 10 sluice gates on Tuesday due to low rainfall in the Mahanadi river system's upper catchment areas.

The floodwater is now discharged through seven sluice gates on the dam's left side and three sluice gates on the dam's right side.

At 9 a.m., the water inflow and outflow into the reservoir were 1.58 lakh cusec and 3.48 lakh cusec, respectively, according to sources. Following that, ten of the twenty gates were closed. The dam's water level is 617.96 feet above its full capacity of 630 feet, and it must be reduced to 615 feet per the existing Rule Curve.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow thunderstorm warning with lightning for the next two days. Thunderstorms with lightning are possible in one or two locations in the districts of Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, and Ganjam until 8.30 a.m. on Wednesday. During the next 24 hours, a similar warning has been issued in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Malkangiri, Koraput, Gajapati, and Ganjam.

Light to moderate rain or thundershowers are also expected across the state over the next five days. On August 11, light to moderate rain or thundershowers may fall in a few places in North Odisha and one or two places in the state's southern districts. 

The following day, light to moderate rain or thundershowers are expected in a few places in interior Odisha and one or two places in coastal districts.
