Hirakud Dam opens three more sluice gates
On Monday, three more gates at the Hirakud Dam in Odisha's Sambalpur district were opened to release floodwater, bringing the total to eight.
Sambalpur: On Monday, three more gates at the Hirakud Dam in Odisha's Sambalpur district were opened to release floodwater, bringing the total to eight.
By 9 a.m., the dam's water level was 614.45 feet above the full reservoir capacity of 630 feet. The reservoir received 1,08,705 cusec of inflow and 1,16,731 cusec of outflow. On Sunday, the reservoir's first floodwater was released through five gates, three on the left spillway and two on the right.
According to sources, more gates were opened as a result of increased rainfall in the upper catchment and a subsequent rise in the dam's water level. All 13 districts downstream of the Hirakud dam have been asked to remain vigilant as the Mahanadi and its distributaries experience a rise in water level in lower catchments following the opening of the dam gates.
"Our goal is to keep the water level at 605 feet by July 31," Upper Mahanadi Basin Chief Engineer Ananda Chandra Sahoo told the media. However, there is currently no risk of flooding, he added.
