Bhubaneswar: On Tuesday, vigilance officers arrested Tehsildar Charles Nayak of Mayurbhanj district's Karanjia for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 12 lakh in two cheques from a person.
Nayak allegedly demanded a bribe from the complainant in order to release rupees 51.75 lakh compensation for land taken over by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). To issue the compensation, he demanded two cheques for Rs 10 lakh and Rs 2 lakh.
The victim handed over the cheques to Nayak and then notified the anti-corruption agency.
In the aftermath of the trap, searches are being conducted at Nayak's office chamber and government quarter in Karanjia, as well as his home near the district headquarters hospital in Bhadrak.
This is the first case of a government official receiving a bribe in the form of a cheque, as well as the largest bribery seizure in Odisha.
Manasi Jena, a Sambalpur Vigilance Division inspector, was arrested in May last year for accepting a Rs 10 lakh bribe from a government official in exchange for not charging him in a bogus corruption case.
Tarun Ranjan Nayak, who works as OAG-III, O/O GRF, TPCODL at Nayapalli in the capital city, and his associate Sailaja Muduli were arrested on Monday for allegedly accepting Rs10,000 as a bribe from a person via PhonePe (Digital mode) for processing a grievance application for an electricity connection to the latter's residence.
"Two cases of bribe taking via PhonePe and one case of bribe taking via unnamed cheque were discovered yesterday." Private individuals who assisted government employees by accepting bribe money in their PhonePe/Bank accounts have also been arrested/prosecuted in all of these cases," a vigilance release said, threatening harsh action against bribe takers and their facilitators.
"Remember, you are not safe when accepting bribes via PhonePe." "We will track your digital footprints and track you down," the release continued.
