Naveen Patnaik has appointed 50 party MLAs to oversee various departments, mirroring the positions held by members of the Odisha Cabinet. What is a shadow cabinet, and is the concept new in India?
Before becoming the Chief Minister of Odisha at the age of 53, Naveen Patnaik spent most of his life abroad and was a well-known socialite. He was close friends with Mick Jagger, the lead singer of the British rock band 'The Rolling Stones'. Perhaps due to his strong interest in British culture, he decided to form a Westminster-style "shadow cabinet" to scrutinize the functioning of Odisha's first BJP government.
