Bhubaneswar: The Indian Railways raised the official death toll in Friday's triple train crash in Odisha's Balasore to 278 after three more passengers died from their injuries, according to news agency PTI.

Aside from the 278 fatalities, 1,100 people were injured in the June 2 accident, according to Khurda Road Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Rinkesh Ray, with less than 200 receiving treatment in various hospitals.

On the other hand, the Odisha government's toll remained unchanged at 275, down from 288 on Sunday. According to Chief Secretary Pradeep Jena, some bodies were counted twice.

According to the most recent updates, 1,009 of the 1,207 people admitted to various government and private hospitals have been discharged. One of the remaining 198 patients is in critical condition. So far, 170 bodies have been identified among the dead, and the state government is arranging for free transportation by hearses/dead body carriers to the destination.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, a former Railway Minister, had previously questioned the death toll, claiming that 61 people from her state alone had died in the triple crash, while 182 remained missing.

Three trains were involved in the accident, which is now being described as one of India's worst train mishaps: the Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express, the Bengaluru-Howrah superfast, and a goods train.
