Bhubaneswar: Almost two months after the horrific triple train accident in Odisha's Balasore district, 29 victims' bodies are still being kept in containers at AIIMS-Bhubaneswar.

On Tuesday, hospital officials announced that the facility had received 162 bodies, of which 81 were handed over to family members in the first phase. "Due to the large number of claimants and a few other issues, DNA samples from both bodies and claimants were sent to New Delhi for matching." 52 more bodies were returned to their families based on DNA test results."

There are 29 more bodies, most of which will go unclaimed if DNA samples do not match, according to the report.

To prevent further decay of the deceased's mortal remains, AIIMS-Bhubaneswar purchased at least five deep freezer containers from Paradip Port.

In July, 29 of the 81 remaining bodies were identified using DNA testing, and the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) cremated the mortal remains of two victims - Dinesh Yadav (31) from Jharkhand and Suresh Ray (23) from Bihar - at the Satya Nagar crematorium here after family members expressed reluctance to transport the bodies due to the long journey.

The June 2 train crash, which involved the Chennai-bound Coromandel Express from Shalimar, the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, and a stationary goods train, claimed 293 lives, with six passengers dying as a result of their injuries while being treated in recent days.
