Squally weather with wind speeds of 40-45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph is expected over the Southeast Bay of Bengal on May 6. On May 7, wind speeds of 40-45 kph with gusts up to 55 kph are expected over the Southeast and adjoining Southwest Bay of Bengal. Wind speeds of 45-55 kmph (gusting to 65 kmph) are expected over Southeast and adjoining Southwest Bay of Bengal in the next 24 hours.
Those at sea are advised to return to safer areas by May 7, when a low pressure system is expected to form over the Bay of Bengal.
Around May 6, a cyclonic circulation is expected to form over the Southeast Bay of Bengal. A Low Pressure Area is expected to form over the same region on May 7 as a result of its influence. On May 8, it is expected to consolidate into a Depression over the Southeast Bay of Bengal. Following that, it is expected to intensify into a Cyclonic Storm as it moves nearly northwards towards the central Bay of Bengal, according to the MeT office.
Its path, intensity, and landfall would be predicted in the coming days. After the formation of the low-pressure area, the exact details of the possible cyclone path and intensification will be known. It also stated that the system is constantly monitored.
When it becomes a cyclonic storm, the system will be named Cyclone Mocha, a name suggested by Yemen. It derives from the Yemeni city of Mocha (or Mokha), which is located on the Red Sea coast. The port city, long known for its coffee trade, also gave its name to the famous Mocha coffee.
Meanwhile, the IMD has issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms and lightning in parts of Odisha until May 7.
