Sambalpur: In a new development in the death of VSSUT graduate Chinmayee Sahoo, police said on Saturday that diatom test results confirmed she drowned.

Chinmayee died as a result of drowning, according to the post-mortem report.

However, Chinmayee's viscera was also sent to a forensic laboratory to determine the exact cause of death, and the report is still pending.

According to Sambalpur Superintendent of Police B Gangadhar, the diatom test report stated that Chinmayee drowned in the dam.

He stated that the diatom test confirms whether death occurred due to drowning or if a body is thrown into a body of water after murder, and that the report revealed that she died due to drowning.

It should be noted that the diatom test is based on the idea that diatoms can be detected in the organs of drowned victims if they inhaled diatom-rich water before dying.

He stated that the police are awaiting the viscera report, which will shed light on the exact cause of death, and that no decision has been made to conduct narco-analysis tests on Chinmayee's two friends. According to Gangadhar, the viscera report will reveal whether or not a poisonous substance was present in the deceased's body.

At the same time, an investigation is underway to determine whether Chinmayee died by suicide, if she was pushed into the dam by someone, or if she was pushed by someone.

The SP went on to say that a thorough examination of Chinmayee's diary, notes, laptop, and phone revealed no evidence of a threat or fear from someone. There is no evidence that she fought with others. The SP stated that she has never expressed any concern to anyone.

Sexual assault had also been ruled out during the doctors' examination, he said.

Chinmayee had gone missing after attending the Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT) convocation at Burla, and her body was discovered floating in the power channel of Hirakud Dam in Sambalpur the next morning. The body had been sent for a post-mortem examination by the police.

The police had sent them to Bhubaneswar for the lie detection test at the State Forensic Science Laboratory after Chinmayee's parents filed a complaint alleging that her two male friends, Pritiman Dey and Manas Tudu, were involved in their daughter's death (SFSL).
