Baripada: Five people have been arrested by Khunta police in Odisha's Mayurbhanj district, including the mother who allegedly sold her infant girl for Rs 800.
According to sources, Karmi Murmu was allegedly dissatisfied with the birth of her second daughter and sold her for Rs 800 to a couple Phulamani Marandi and Akhil Marandi of Bipracharanpur village via Mahi Murmu of her village.
Musu Murmu, her husband, was unaware of the deal because he was working in Tamil Nadu. When he returned home, he inquired about her and learned about the deal from his neighbors, while his wife informed him that the infant had died. He filed a complaint at Khunta police station, distraught.
In addition to the mother, police arrested the mediator and the couple who purchased the baby, which was then given to the father.
