Jajpur: According to reports, the primary offender in the case in which three journalists were beaten while covering the polls in Odisha's Jajpur district during the third phase of the panchayat elections on Sunday has been detained.

Rakesh Mullick was the name given to him.

So far, 11 people have been arrested, including six women.

In connection with the incident, police apprehended 25 persons on Sunday, including women. According to the SP, more arrests are imminent.

While covering an alleged rigging attempt at two booths in Bachol panchayat under Binjharpur block, the journalists were assaulted.

The journalists, Debashis Sahoo, Gulshan Ali Nawaz, and Bijay Sahoo, arrived at the polling stations after hearing that miscreants had decamped with vote boxes and dumped them into a nearby pond.

They were, however, apprehended by a mob, who tied them up and viciously attacked them. They also caused damage to their vehicle by throwing stones at it. The injured journalists were then rescued by police and sent to Binjharpur CHC for treatment.

In the attack on the scribes in Jajpur, Odisha Sambad reporter Himansu Padhi was also beaten up.

Following that, police detained numerous people and held a flag march in Bachol panchayat.

The State Election Commission (SEC) was approached by editors of media organisations and journalists' unions, who wanted protection for the scribes covering the panchayat elections.
