Bhubaneswar: Two home guards and a 'gram rakhi' are among the five people arrested in Odisha's Koraput district for allegedly stealing Rs 1.15 lakh cash from two people from Andhra Pradesh.

The incident occurred on Thursday, when two people from Andhra Pradesh, Kamedi TT Babu and Bisoyi Bhimdhar, were reportedly on their way to Jeypore to purchase a power tiller. They decided to stop at a rest shed due to the excessive heat. While they were resting, the five accused arrived in a car, assaulted them, and stole all of their money. According to sources, the accused also attempted to run over the duo as they attempted to stop them.

"This was unquestionably a difficult and heartbreaking task." Three of the five accused are members of our staff. "The two other accused are local criminals who have a history of ganja smuggling, extortion, and looting," Nandapur SDPO Sanjay Mahapatra told the media.

According to him, the entry and exit points were blocked, and the five were apprehended after a chase. He added that three mobile phones and Rs 80,000 were seized from them.

Damrudhan Majhi and Arjun Pangi, the accused home guards, are currently stationed at Padua police station in Koraput district. Nilakantha Pangi has been identified as the gram rakhi.

According to sources, the gang's leader is a former samiti member.
