Cuttack: On Monday, a tusker carcass was discovered in the Athagarh area of Cuttack district, continuing an unabated trend of elephant deaths in Odisha.

According to sources, the carcass was discovered inside a cashew forest in the Betia range of the Athagarh forest division.

While the elephant's tusks were found intact, there were injury marks on the animal's trunk, raising the possibility that the elephant was killed by poachers.

Forest department officials rushed to the scene and launched an investigation.

The cause of death will be determined after a postmortem examination. More information is awaited.

It should be noted that the Athagarh forest division has been in the news for a number of elephant deaths.

Four days ago, an elephant was discovered dead with its tusks removed in the Similipal wildlife sanctuary in the Mayurbhanj district.

According to official data, Odisha recorded 245 elephant deaths between 2019 and 22 in the last three years.

According to the sources, the state experienced the highest number of jumbo deaths in 2021, followed by 82 in 2019-20 and 77 in 2020-21 from 35 forest and wildlife divisions.
